Pre-War Depression

A person hears only what they understand. – Johan Wolfgang von Goethe

After the loss of her dear Robert and having her first son taken away from her, Frieda was inconsolable for a very long time. She drifted through life with no real purpose or motivation.

During this time, a charismatic leader emerged in Germany – the now infamous Adolf Hitler. When he first arose to power he was extremely well spoken, passionate, and said all the things that the depressed German people wanted to hear. They had been suffering from massive unemployment and inflation since the end of World War I, and the Great Depression in the US did not help matters any.

Frieda recalls that initially what Hitler promised were jobs – and he delivered on that front by reducing unemployment significantly. By keeping his promise the people began to love him.

Frieda remembered that it wasn’t until he gained the loyalty of the people, that he showed his true motivations. Then people began to realize fairly quickly that Hitler really was a monster. Unfortunately it was too little, too late…
